A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens occurring in all people but at different times and severity. It is the most common cause of reversible loss of vision. The causes of a cataract are numerous; however, the most common cause is aging.

As a patient ages, the lens thickens with added layers, similar to a tree trunk or an onion. In time the layers become compact and less transparent. In most cases the cause is unknown. However, cataracts can be associated with diabetes, trauma, inflammation and certain drugs.
